Connecting to UVA wireless networks

Links to more detailed information can be found on the ITSWeb page https://in.virginia.edu/wifi

Connecting to the "eduroam" Wireless Network

Students may want to setup their laptops to connect on the UVA wireless network. UVA supplies the wireless connectivity for all of the University including Darden.

  1. Connect to the "UVA Wifi Setup" network
  2. Go to: https://in.virginia.edu/wifi and click the "Get UVA WiFi/Digital Certificate" button
  3. You will need your UVA (not Darden) account information to run the tool
  4. The Tool will configure the UVA wireless connection and download a digital certificate for the connection security

The eduroam wireless network will work at any school that is a participating member.

The digital certificate expires in 12 months and will need to be renewed.

Connecting to the "wahoo" Wireless Network

Once the Network Setup Tool has completed the install of the digital certificate that allows connection to the eduroam wireless network, your device will be registered.

Registered devices can also connect to a hidden wireless network known as wahoo.

This network only works at UVA, does not require a certificate, and does not expire.

To find the wahoo network:

  1. You will need to be on grounds
  2. Go to your found wireless networks and scroll to the bottom of the list
  3. Look for a hidden network with a shield icon on it
  4. Click on it and then click "Connect"
  5. The Name (SSID) is "wahoo" and Security is "none"

Occasionally (especially if you have not been at Darden for a while), your device will "forget" the wahoo network and you will have to repeat these steps.

Registering a device that cannot run the UVA Network Setup Tool

Devices that cannot run the Network Setup Tool will need to be manually registered with UVA.

  1. Connect to the "UVA Wifi Setup" network
  2. Go to netreg.virginia.edu
  3. Enter for Faculty, Staff, and Students
  4. Logon with your UVA (not Darden) credentials
  5. Register your device hardware address (also known as the MAC address)

Your hardware address can be found under the network settings on your device.
